What causes alopecia?
Modified By Fi on 29/04/2008 04:33:20)

I am just curious as to what causes this hair condition? My best friend Kaye is slowly losing her hair fast, she's now in an advanced state of alopecia. She just wore a scarf over her head to conceal her bald head. I feel for her because I think it just made her think less of herself. She had a low self-esteem as a result of the massive hair loss. If any one of you knows about this rare condition, I'd greatly appreciate your views and opinions.

In behalf of Kaye, I thank you in advance. ;)

Hi getprepped

The most common type of alopecia seen in women is androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern alopecia or baldness. This is seen as hair thinning predominantly over the top and sides of the head. It affects approximately one-third of all susceptible women, but is most commonly seen after menopause, although it may begin as early as puberty. Normal hair fall is approximately 100-125 hairs per day. fortunately, these hairs are replaced. True alopecia occurs when lost hairs are not regrown or when the daily hair shed exceeds 125 hairs. Genetically, hair loss can come from either parent's side of the family.

There are two different types of alopecia, medically known as anagen effluvium and Telogen effluvium. Anagen effluvium is generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that poison the growing hair follicle Telogen effluvium, is due to an increased number of hair follicles entering the resting stage. The most common causes of telogen effluvium are:

  • Physical stress: surgery, illness, anemia, rapid weight change.
  • Emotional stress: mental illness, death of a family member.
  • Thyroid abnormalities.
  • Medications: High does of Vitamin A -- Blood pressure medications -- Gout medications.
  • Hormonal causes: pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause.

This is only a snippet, google alopesia and there is a lot of information for you to read, my friend suffered but hers was only in 2 patches and she could hide it with her hairstyle. Her condition was caused by stress. HTH

Re: What causes alopesia?

Thanks for the information. This will be very helpful for her. She haven't got any professional help for the moment. She's afraid to get out of her house because she's afraid to get ridiculed by people. At least, I can somehow explain to her the condition. Thanks a lot sunshinegirl.

Journalist Jennie Bond has written an article in today's Daily Mail regarding her own hair loss during the past year.

The article also explores the causes of alopecia and the various treatments available including Regaine (also called Minoxidil) and the supplement Viviscal (which Jennie is now paid to promote in the UK following an approach from the company).
